Lumen®

The world’s first hand-held device to measure metabolism with sequential recording accurately. Providing information about the nutritional state...

The champions’ invention

As we know, having a good nutritional status and a healthy lifestyle is vital to enjoying good health and achieving well-being. The idea of Lumen® arises from this evident need. Lumen® began with twin sisters Merav and Michal Mor, two Ironman race winners with PhDs in physiology. As researchers and athletes, they were enthusiastic about developing a way to provide personalized nutrition.(1) Their vision was to use cutting-edge technology to enhance people’s access to personalized nutritional assessment and encourage them to improve their health. The twin sisters teamed up with Daniel Tal, Dror Ceder, and Avi Mostov, founders of the company Metaflow Ltd. In 2018, they developed the first Lumen® prototype, an AI-equipped breathalyzer device that promises to help balance the user’s metabolism.(2)

About Lumen

Lumen® is a smart breathalyzer device that measures the Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER) to determine metabolic fuel utilization. It explores metabolism in less than a minute by measuring CO2 production rate from a single breath maneuver with a breath-hold of 10 seconds. The device measures 102 mm x 41.4 mm x 33.3 mm and weighs 75g. It is equipped with a CO2 and a flow sensor powered by a lithium polymer battery lasting up to 14 days. It uses a Bluetooth connection to pair the device with an app installed in a WiFi-capable smartphone. (2)

The CO2 levels reflect the energy source the user’s body currently metabolizes based on steady oxygen consumption under resting conditions.(3) Carbohydrate oxidation produces more CO2 relative to oxygen consumption. In contrast, in lipid oxidation, less carbon dioxide is produced.(1)

Afterward, the app provides a score on a scale of 1 to 5. One and two mean the user is primarily producing energy from lipids. Three means both carbohydrates and lipids are being used. Finally, a score of 4 and 5 implies carbohydrate metabolism is predominant.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Some of the advantages of the Lumen® are its availability, small size, and efficacy compared to more expensive and complex alternatives. Unlike the metabolic cart, a standardized test to calculate energy expenditure, it can be performed anywhere without needing specialized medical professionals or a hospital setting.(4)

The San Francisco State University performed an external validation study concluding Lumen® provides similar results to clinical RER tests.(1) Moreover, periodically measuring an individual’s different metabolic parameters can provide valuable information about metabolic irregularities, allowing an individual to seek medical attention.

On the other side, using Lumen® requires commitment. Some patients might feel overwhelmed by taking several measurements throughout the day, leading to poor compliance. Lastly, its price (around 300- 350 dollars) can be considered high for some users, especially if not medically indicated.

A brief review

As people grow more conscious about the vital importance of nutrition, the demand for technological solutions to address this issue is growing considerably. Lumen®️ has been proven to measure metabolic fuel usage accurately. This device provides personalized nutrition recommendations and daily guidance on sleep, diet, and exercise.(1)

Regular measurements may offer metabolic status insights to patients and produce valuable scientific information. A better understanding of metabolic flexibility and nutrition may improve patients’ nutrition and health.(4)
