The Forum of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (FAIM)
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly evolving to create solutions to many of the problems in modern medicine. Artificial intelligence revolves around creating algorithms that allow machines to complete tasks that require human intelligence. Algorithms have been developed that enable computer programs to diagnose disease or read images with great accuracy. Such algorithms allow remote or underserved populations to access care through a single or a couple of machines despite the lack of a resourceful healthcare system, decreasing health disparities. They also facilitate access during dire times like the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Such algorithms can also “learn” from data and can outperform the physician as they are perfected. This increased diagnostic accuracy provides physicians with second opinions, decreases workload, and increases cost-efficacy.
AI has not only made reaching a diagnosis easier but has also allowed for better long-term monitoring of patients and easier personalization of treatment. Advances in AI have also made it possible to increase clinical trial efficiency and accelerate drug development through apt handling of data. AI can potentially revolutionize modern medicine but still has a long way to go before becoming an integral part of standard care. The Forum of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (FAIM) is dedicated to educating physicians about the implications that AI may very much have on the future of their practice.

Sameer Mehta, MD, FACC, MBA
Sameer Mehta, MD, FACC, MBA, is a U.S. interventional cardiologist who has presaged a new medical specialty of the STEMI Interventionist with his innovative work in performing angioplasty for treating heart attacks. Dr. Mehta has pioneered the development of population-based heart attack programs in several countries, including China, India, Brazil, and more.
Dr. Mehta has published extensively on improving STEMI outcomes by optimizing procedural techniques and refining the STEMI process. Dr. Mehta’s research and training endeavors in Acute Myocardial Infarction care have involved telemedicine and, more recently, Artificial Intelligence-supported EKG tools. These aim to reduce disparities of care between developed and developing countries and increase access to urgent treatment for Acute Myocardial Infarction.

Through the creation of the FAIM, Dr. Mehta focused the extensive repository of AI knowledge in medicine to educate physicians about the burgeoning role of AI in Medicine. FAIM champions a global movement to advance AI’s role in medicine by bringing together the various stakeholders involved in this initiative. Towards advancing its goals, FAIM generates a monthly newsletter, and it has just published a textbook called Health.ai.
LUMEN FOUNDATION
Dr. Sameer Mehta is the Chairman of the Lumen Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to saving lives from heart attacks and creating population-based STEMI networks, most notably, the Latin American Infarct Network (LATIN). Eliminating chaos, streamlining pre-hospital care and efficient ambulance transportation form the cornerstone mandates of decreasing delays that result in increased morbidity and mortality from Acute Myocardial Infarctions.
