Canada

An Ambitious Canadian Project

In 1983, Canada started its journey on artificial intelligence after launching the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR)CIFAR is a government-funded organization that supports high-quality investigation and expansion of knowledge in human, social, natural, and life sciences.(1) Its interest in leading the artificial intelligence era encouraged the Canadian government to invest around $125 million in 2017 to create the world’s first national AI program: The Pan-Canadian AI Strategy.(2)Together with the top three national AI institutes, Vector Institute, Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute, and the MILA Institute, CIFAR is looking to attract world-class researchers, advance national AI initiatives, and develop AI global leadership.(3)

Vector Institute - Institute Vecteur

The Vector Institute is an independent corporation dedicated to developing machine learning and deep learning algorithms to collaborate on real-world problem solutions. For example, its interest in improving the Canadian healthcare system encouraged them to structure a Three Year Strategic Plan.(4)One of the essential pillars of this project is Health Data Analysis, which uses machine learning to increase health insights and predictions. It helps healthcare providers to identify populations and patients at risk of certain diseases while protecting patients’ privacy.(5)Among its latest publication, the Vector Institute proposed the use of machine learning analyses to predict readmissions and mortality in patients with heart failure by formally evaluating the quality of different predicting algorithms.(6)

Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute

The Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (AMII) is a non-profit organization that looks to translate artificial intelligence scientific advancements into practice to enhance industrial, economic, and healthcare growth.(7) AMII is committed to supporting energy, healthcare, and agriculture companies  reach higher levels of efficiency and effectiveness. This is by creating resilient and integrated systems through its Virtuous Circle and AI Adoption Spectrum Plans.(8)Its alliance with the University of Alberta has allowed it to use health data to build AI-powered tools to find hidden relationships and patterns to help provide a broader perspective on the COVID-19 pandemic’s behavior.(9)Its ultimate goal is to become the number one ranked AI research institute in the world by 2025.(8)

MILA - Quebec AI Institute

As one of the top AI organizations in Canada, the MILA – Quebec AI Institute is recognized for its research on language modeling, machine translation, object recognition, and generative models.(10)It has become a leading AI hub with more than $1.34 billion yearly investment and more than 19.000 jobs related to AI research in 2020. This institution prioritizes healthcare innovation, from bioinformatics and medical machine learning to neuroscience and oncology. Among its latest developments, TorchDrug has become of great interest. It is an artificial intelligence platform that uses machine learning algorithms to accelerate drug discovery. Another awe inspiring project is the development of a standardized protocol to assess spinal cord MRIs. Using biomarkers or identifying specific structures, this breakthrough study will create an open-source database to accelerate the work of researchers in neuroscience.(11)
