KardiaMobile® Card

KardiaMobile Card as a single lead personal EKG

In every country, the number of people using mobile devices is rising. The increasing versatility of mobile devices allows for their use in diagnosing and following up with patients with cardiovascular disorders. KardiaMobile Card (AliveCor Inc., San Francisco, CA, USA) is a portable, mobile, connected electrocardiogram (ECG) device for iOS and Android smartphone users. KM is a small device with two conducting plates that wirelessly connect to a smartphone and an app installed on the user’s smartphone. It allows for one-lead ECG recording, for example, when troubling symptoms appear (palpitations, chest pain, dyspnea, and others).  (1)

KardiaMobile Card (KM) is a portable, durable personal EKG that goes anywhere you go. KM is thin and light as a credit card, fits perfectly in a wallet, and records an accurate medical-grade EKG in seconds. KM is easy to use; place the fingers or thumbs on the electrodes, and the device will detect up to six of the most common arrhythmias and make an accurate analysis of the heart rhythm with every recording in 30 seconds.KM operates completely offline (no WiFi required), is Bluetooth-enabled, and has a convenient handheld design to keep in a wallet. The device is water resistant, enhancing its endurance in multiple situations.  (2)

KM Card’s goal is to detect atrial fibrillation (AF) periods, Bradycardia, and Tachycardia, which, if confirmed by an FDA-approved algorithm, can then be reported to the physician in charge of the patient’s follow-up. The availability of KM has prompted the current assessment of its usefulness in assessing the underlying rhythm and basic ECG parameters in comparison with 12-lead ECG recordings (PQ, RR, and QT intervals). (1)

KM is not cleared as a medical device to detect or communicate any other results, rhythms, or arrhythmias. KM devices are single-lead EKGs; any arrhythmia present in a Lead I EKG recording may also be present in a Kardia EKG recording. In case the patients need it, they can share their EKG with their doctor to have it checked for other arrhythmias. (1.2)
