OMRON HeartGuide

High Blood Pressure is a significant disease in the U.S., affecting more than 100 million people and causing considerable death tolls due to its complications. The most worrying aspect is that some individuals might be unwittingly living with this disease due to its asymptomatic course, manifesting symptoms only with advanced disease.

Artificial intelligence has been playing a role across many industries, and the medical field is an important focus of this developing technology. Nowadays, we have devices that can inform when something is wrong with a patient and even detect altered mood states.

The OMRON HeartGuide smartwatch helps detect those fluctuations of pressure during the day. It can track fitness-related activity, sleep patterns and even set daily reminders and notifications from a phone on the device.

High Blood Pressure keeps being a significant problem in the United States, taking nearly half a million deaths per year as a primary or contributing cause. (1) . Even worse, only 1 in 4 adults with hypertension have the condition under control.

As one of the silent killers in the medical world, hypertension plays a role in many prevalent conditions such as strokes, transient ischemic attacks, dementia, kidney failure, retinopathy, and even sexual dysfunction.

OMRON decided that it was time to get this disease under control and created a smartwatch that would monitor blood pressure at all times when instructed and came up with the FDA-approved HeartGuide Smartwatch, allowing many patients to have control of their health.

About HeartGuide

The smartwatch was first announced at the end of 2017 by OMRON that comes complete with a state-of-the-art oscillometric blood pressure monitor.

The OMRON HeartGuide includes pumps, cuffs, and valves in the form of a wristband. Ultimately, the device’s most unique and advanced technology is a flexible synthetic band designed to inflate and deflate quickly while keeping its shape to take blood-pressure readings within minutes. The inflatable cuff embedded in the band delivers accurate blood pressure readings, similar to the upper arm sphygmomanometers widely used nowadays.(2)

It only needs to be charged twice per week and can hold up to 100 blood pressure readings, physical activity history for up to 7 days, and sleep quality measurement up to 7 times.

Advantages and disadvantages

One of the advantages that the Omron HeartGuide monitor possesses is the capacity to measure blood pressure (BP) anytime and anywhere, making this an excellent tool for quick assessment of unexpected symptoms during the day or self-monitoring of blood pressure. This characteristic exerts the most significant benefit as a faster, reliable method for determining blood pressure during life-threatening episodes that require specialized assistance.

The device offers the possibility of two different sizes, which is imperative for an adequate BP measurement. Furthermore, the battery life span is about 10-14 days, making it easier for older adults to use without needing to recharge it often.(3)

It can track physical activity and sleep quality. Plus, the advantages of receiving texts, messages, and call notifications.

A disadvantage of the HeartGuide monitor is the bulky design which could make it uncomfortable for daily use, although it is not bigger than two quarters. Additionally, the user’s technique is essential for a reliable measurement for which the company gives training, and the user manual is friendly for everyone to understand.

The increasing interest in finding new and easier ways to track patients’ vital signs has become increasingly relevant. The development of wearable devices has opened the door to explore more effective ways to monitor patients’ wellness.

The OMRON HeartGuide monitor is the first FDA-approved BP monitor smartwatch. Its use can be a great asset for patients who constantly monitor their blood pressure and overall wellness. Furthermore, it can assess cases of masked hypertension to track the BP readings over time.

This smartwatch is an innovative BP monitoring device that could help detect hypertension earlier in life and further contribute to earlier management of this condition. Expectations of the future of OMRON are the development of many new and wondrous devices that will follow the HeartGuide that will set a high standard in the present.
