Switzerland

Switzerland formulates innovative strategies to revolutionize society by deploying digital health and customizing medicine on the market...

Switzerland hosts a large number of distinguished institutions, academies, and research facilities in the area of AI. This proximity between cutting-edge technology and scientific development explains why worldwide renowned tech society members such as Google, IBM, and HPE conduct their research from here.

The Center for AI in Medicine (CAIM) is a factual-finding educational institution known to change the stage for AI-integrated medical technology. It aims to develop tools to improve patient care and ease the work of physicians and nurses. Its inauguration on January 2021 rendered it a joint Center for its partners: the University of Bern’s medical faculty, the Inselspital Bern University Hospital, University Psychiatry Services, and the Swiss Institute for Translational and Entrepreneurial Medicine (Stem-Insel).(1)

The CAIM thrives on Bern’s convenient constellation of professionals from the scientific, healthcare, and industry domains. The Medical Faculty’s digitization initiative at the University of Bern ambitiously nurtures the CAIM. This initiative created five professorships in AI and digitalization in medicine, attracting top researchers to Bern. These leadership positions merge into the CAIM’s workforce, along with more than 80 investigators working on AI and medicine at the University.

Switzerland formulates innovative strategies to revolutionize society by deploying digital health and customizing medicine on the market. In Switzerland, science and labor intertwine to guarantee direct technology transfer in a versatile and compact ecosystem.(1,2)

Ava

Ava is a salutary technology institution founded in Zurich by Lea Von Bidder, Pascal Koenig, and Peter Stein. It is known for the Ava bracelet, a wearable fertility tracker that follows menstrual cycles by estimating and scanning the wearer’s vital signs. The report collected from the bracelet is seen on an app. It intends to assist women in leading their reproductive health by preventing unwanted pregnancies, orienting conception, and tracing health during pregnancy or menopause.(3)

Exploris

Exploris enhances lab tests with AI-based predictive modeling to improve lab results interpretation. The platform comprises clinical data sources, medical knowledge, and an unprecedented software engine capable of detecting new combinations of markers. As a pioneer in Artificial Intelligence-powered diagnostics, Exploris developed the Cardio Explorer. This non-invasive AI-based diagnostic test timely detects patients with coronary artery disease.(4)

Ophtho

Established in November 2014, Ophtho Robotics is a Swiss company committed to developing medical robotics for safer and more comfortable ophthalmologic treatments. It comprises world-class engineers and diverse eye-related specialists passionate about presenting high-tech therapeutical solutions. Ophtho Robotics is developing a fully automated system to deliver intravitreal injections safely to treat many chronic ocular diseases. The state-of-the-art technology utilizes specific sensors to identify and track patient’s eyes.

Patient safety and comfort are fundamental to the system design. Additionally, an automated injection system removes the bottleneck during current-day ophthalmic injections by increasing the availability of facilities and resources. The initiative would improve economic efficiency and decrease costs, as patients would no longer need expensive operating rooms for these procedures.(5)

Optimo

Optimo Medical AG is a medically applied science and IT-cloud organization that provides solutions for ophthalmologic surgery. The company consists of an interdisciplinary team of experts in ocular tissue biomechanics, computer simulation technology, software development, ophthalmology, physics, mathematics, and optics. Optimeyes product-line employs biomechanical computations on measurement data to reconstruct a digital twin of the patients’ eyes. With this virtual replica, the software rushes a simulated arcuate keratotomy to determine the personalized optimal incision parameters for the femtosecond laser. Advantageously, this CE-certified technology allows for in-silico patient-specific planning to ideally correct astigmatism during cataract surgery.(6)
