AI Leadership Initiative

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been described as a game-changer, as it grants enormous power to countries and companies that utilize its full potential. As a long-standing leader in the modern era, the United States of America has consistently developed and implemented strategies to guarantee its superiority in the rapidly growing field of AI.(1)  

In 2020, the Federal Government launched the National AI Initiative to secure enough resources for proper AI innovation. AI innovation can enhance economic prosperity, increase national security, and improve quality of life. Among its key policies, the initiative encourages a thorough collaboration between industries, academic centers, and international allies to generate groundbreaking technological advances.

The initiative also aims to prepare current and future generations of American workers for integrating AI systems across all sectors of the economy and society.(2,3)To ensure a well-regulated AI development, the Federal Government has also mandated a series of governing principles to uphold the privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties. These guidelines aim to support three main goals: ensuring public engagement, limiting regulatory overreach, and promoting trustworthy AI products/services.(2,4)

Recent data has shown a strong performance in detecting early-stage colorectal cancer with a sensitivity of 94% and a specificity of 94%. In 2022, it is expected that the company will reveal its latest product Curie™, a completely standardized platform to provide AI-powered solutions for reading and reporting healthcare data.(9,10)

The company recently announced its unique algorithms will be integrated directly into a national cloud infrastructure. This cloud support will include enterprise-level Hospital Information System (“HIS”) and Picture Archiving and Communications System (“PACS”) software that will conduct clinical studies to evaluate the impact of technologies on diagnostic quality and efficiency. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology named Enlitic the 5th most innovative AI company globally, ranking above Facebook and Microsoft.(9)

They envision a future with intelligent hospitals that would improve outcomes, lower the total cost of care, and improve patient experiences.(11)

One of its most ambitious projects is the Ion experience, an innovative robotic-assisted platform to enable minimally invasive biopsies that could become a crucial part of the early diagnosis of lung cancer. It is based on PlanPoint’s software that translates a CT scan of the patient’s lung into a 3D model map to determine the nodules that need a biopsy. This way, the physician will be able to drive an ultra-thin robotic catheter into the patient’s lung in an almost non-traumatic procedure. Ion’s system is built to integrate seamlessly into operating rooms and bronchoscopy units.(12)
